The Low Down On Life Insurance

Life insurance is designe to protect the future of your loved ones or business associates in your the event of your death. So it seems that it will be easy to understand a life insurance plan. But truly understanding all of the facets of life insurance is complicated in nature. So we put together a few pointers to make life insurance much easier to understand.

There are two primary types of life insurance:

Term Life Insurance: This is also known as temporary life insurance. You purchase coverage for a set monthly price that will cover you for the number of years you elect (the "term" of the life insurance policy). If you die during that time period, you beneficiaries will receive the amount of coverage that you selected when you purchased your life insurance policy. There are different types of term life insurance plans defined below.

Increasing/Decreasing Term: The death benefit of this type of life insurance plan will increase or decrease. Usually this happens in one year increments over the course of the life policy. We suggest choosing an Increasing/Decreasing Term life insurance plan that is annually renewable if the length of your life policy is less than four years.

Level Term: Premiums and coverage with this type of life insurance are fixed over a certain period of time. If the length of the policy is longer (5, 10 or 20 years), we suggest choosing a Level Term life insurance policy.

Permanent Life Insurance: As the name implies, permanent life insurance will last until you fail to make a payment, and provides your beneficiary with a death benefit with no regard to how long you may live. Below are the types of permanent life insurance that are available.

Traditional Whole Life Insurance: A whole life insurance plan covers you for your entire life. Bth the premium and the death benefit remain the same for as long as you keep you insurance policy. If you continue to pay the premiums, this type of life insurance policy will not expire. When you are younger, you are charged a premium that is slightly lower than you would pay for a if you are older. Opposed to a term life insurance plan, this type of life insurance builds cash value the longer you keep it.

Universal Life Insurance: This type of life insurance policy is a bit more complicated. It is not only a life insurance plan, it is an investment vehicle. You can choose to pay any amount of money into your plan in addition to the premium amount, and the excess will be used for investments. Your earnings will be placed into a savings account. You can use these earnings toward future premiums or simply allow it to grow.

Variable Life Insurance: This kind of life insurance policy also has a cash value component. It works pretty much the same as universal life insurance by allowing you to use your returns of investment to offset your premiums or to grow in your savings account. However, variable life offers a wider array of investment vehicles such as stock funds. This life insurance option also involves higher risk. If your investments do not perform well, your cash value and death benefit will probably decrease. On the other hand, if your investments make a profit, your cash value will grow along with your death benefit.
